Summary

On January 12th 2010, a magnitude 7 earthquake struck Haiti with an epicenter near Leogane and only 16 miles from the capital of Port-au-Prince. Over the following two weeks, more than 50 aftershocks continued to strike the area. Massive damage occurred in Port-au-Prince, including wide-scale damage to infrastructure which severely hampered relief efforts. The quakes struck the most populated region of the country and thus, casualty rates were high with around 316,000 deaths, 300,000 injuries, and estimates of around 1 million people affected overall.
